Department of Natural Resources and Environment Director Rebecca A. Humphries today announced that a second round of grants totaling $197,525 has been awarded for the complete cleanup of nine Michigan scrap tire sites, in order to reduce potential public health and environmental concerns, such as fire and mosquitoes. This funding will help protect the health of these communities, cleaning up more than 193,125 passenger tire equivalents (PTEs), a measure used to account for different weights and sizes of tires that may be present at a cleanup site.
The grantees will have until Oct. 31, 2010, to complete contract requirements for having the tires removed and processed in accordance with a DNRE-approved tire removal plan.
