(Bryant Mill Pond area (during mill operation)
These activities occurred June of 1998 to October of 1999.
In February of 1998, the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) obtained the services of the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) to perform a time-critical removal action (removal) near the Allied Operable Unit. The removal action focused on a reach of Portage Creek between Alcott Street and Cork Street commonly known as the Bryant Mill Pond. Removal activities consisted of:
-
Clearing trees and vegetation within the Bryant Mill Pond area and diverting approximately 4,000 feet of Portage Creek to allow for heavy equipment access.
-
Contaminated sediments, soils, and residual paper wastes were excavated from the Portage Creek floodplain.
-
Wastes were placed in adjacent containment areas (former Allied dewatering lagoons). The Portage Creek floodplain, creek and floodplain were backfilled and restored.
