Hoff Industries- fenced site

The Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) received notification on May 10, 2005 from the U.S. EPA that it was awarded a Brownfield Cleanup grant for the 2005 funding year.  The proposal was to perform a hazardous site cleanup at the former Hoff Industries site in Grand Rapids. The $200,000 EPA grant was supplemented by CMI matching funds of $50,000.  For more information about this project, or sale of the property, please contact Ron Smedley at 517-373-4805 or at smedleyr@michigan.gov.

Cleanup and demolition began in August 2006 and concluded in October with the installation of a fence around the property.  Some soil and shallow groundwater contamination still exists, however, the site is redevelopable and is currently zoned light industrial.  The grant was closed out with EPA in August 2007.

The US EPA, as authorized by the Small Business Liability Relief  and Brownfields Revitalization Act of 2002, made these funds available to  states, tribes, municipalities, and communities to perform environmental cleanups, and enhance redevelopment options at contaminated properties.  Brownfields in Michigan include old manufacturing buildings, gas stations, and sites where pollutants came into contact with soil and groundwater.
