Site Name: Chemical Plant and Tar Pit
Jennings, MI

Site ID: 57000001

LOCATION: This site is located north of the town of Jennings along the south shore of Crooked Lake. The site rests on approximately 40 acres of recreational land.

SITE HISTORY: During the late 1800's until 1922 a plant existed at the site that derived various chemicals from a wood distillation process. Apparently the tar-like waste product was disposed of onto the ground and directly into Crooked Lake. A groundwater contamination plume exists approximately 2.5 miles long. The groundwater is aesthetically impacted with a creosote-like odor. The on land source area has been excavated and thermally treated to destroy the contamination. Contaminated sediments currently remain in Crooked Lake near the former plant site.

CLEANUP ACTIONS: CMI and CRF money is being used to sheet pile, excavate and dispose of the contaminated lake sediments. Removal of the contaminated lake sediments is expected in 2004/05.

REDEVELOPMENT POTENTIAL: The property is currently in private ownership. The site is a highly developable parcel of land along the shore of Crooked Lake. Potential future use will be for single or multiple residential dwellings.
