LOCATION: This abandoned store is located near the center of town.
SITE HISTORY: The abandoned, small, (approximately 960-sq. ft.) old commercial building tax reverted to the State for non-payment of taxes. Due to the dilapidated condition of the building, the City building inspector condemned it.
CLEANUP ACTIONS:  CMI funds in the amount of $32,179 were used to demolish the building, remove and dispose of demolition debris, and ready the property for redevelopment.

LOCATION: The Smiths Packing Property is an irregularly shaped parcel located in an area of vacant and industrial property to the east of Business Route US-31 on the south side of Young Avenue in the City of Muskegon.
SITE HISTORY: The property was utilized as a slaughterhouse and meat packing plant. The property's primary use for over fifty years was a meat packing operation.  The operation included a stockyard, and three buildings where killing, butchering and processing of the animals occurred.  Portions of the property have been filled with foundry sand. An underground fuel storage tank was removed in 2000. Some 55 gallon drums with unknown contents were present along the property line.
CLEANUP ACTIONS: $175,109 in CMI funds were used to conduct a limited site investigation, to demolish the existing buildings and address environmental concerns.
REDEVELOPMENT POTENTIAL: The City of Muskegon believes this property has good potential for redevelopment because of its location. The property is part of a industrial park proposed for the area. See the city's website for more information at: http://www.shorelinecity.com

SITE NAME: Northshore Hospital Site

LOCATION: The Site is located adjacent to the former Zephyr Naph Sol Refinery near the Muskegon River in a commercial area of North Muskegon.
SITE HISTORY: The Site is the location of a former State Hospital and Tuberculosis Sanitarium that has been abandoned since 1977.
CLEANUP ACTIONS: Over $230,278 in CMI funds were used to demolish the building, remove and dispose of demolition debris, abandon several underground vaults on the property, and ready the property for redevelopment.

SITE NAME: Old Wagoner Transportation Site

LOCATION: The site is located at the southwest corner of Hackley and Getty Streets.
SITE HISTORY: The site had an abandoned, burned down truck-washing & maintenance garage and an old abandoned gas-station/garage with gas pump isles & associated piping, UST's, small AST's, contaminated soils, drums and tires. The abandoned gas station was transferred to the City of Muskegon Heights through tax reversion, while the burned down truck maintenance garage is still in the tax reversion process.  The unsecured buildings, tanks, contaminated soils and drums present a potential hazard to nearby residents.
CLEANUP ACTIONS: Up to $250,000 in CMI monies were used for demolition and removal of both buildings, and removal of the tanks, drums, tires and highly contaminated soils. Additionally, the site will need some environmental site assessment and most likely some additional environmental remediation.
REDEVELOPMENT POTENTIAL: The City of Muskegon Heights sold the properties for the new Muskegon Family Care offices at 2201 Getty Street.
