LOCATION: This site is located on a half-acre parcel in the City of Petoskey on US 31 and within the central business district.

SITE HISTORY: This parcel of property was formerly a part of a larger limestone mining operation which functioned during the turn of the century. The city was given this property as a gift from the Northern Lime Company in 1944. The property has remained vacant since that time. Soil samples collected and analyzed by the MDEQ indicates the presence of Naphthalene at 1800 ppb, which exceeded the state's 850 ppb groundwater/surface water interface (GSI) criteria..

SITE STATUS: Engineering controls have been put in place to address migration of contaminants. Construction of engineering controls to address physical hazards and to facilitate reuse of the site are ongoing.

CLEANUP ACTIONS: A total of $102,177CMI dollars were used for response activities to prevent migration of contaminants that may threaten surface water and implement engineering controls to enhance the structural integrity of the naturally occurring limestone walls to prevent degradation of the City's existing infrastructure. The project was completed in November 2000.

REDEVELOPMENT POTENTIAL: The City of Petoskey intended to convert this parcel into City green space to enhance the historic gaslight downtown business district.
