EPA Brownfield Grants for Michigan Applicants in 2011-12

The 2012 U.S. EPA Section 104 Brownfield Grants were due on November 28, 2011.  The DEQ Remediation Division provided letters of acknowledgement for 49 different entities applying for funding.  Entities provided the following information to the DEQ: 
1. The name of the entity applying for EPA funding (City, County, Coalition, Brownfield Authority, etc.);
2. Contact information (name and title of local official, or authority director, and address);
3. The type of grant being applied for (petroleum or hazardous substances, assessment, cleanup, or revolving loan fund);
4. The amount being requested for each grant;
5. General information about the use of the funds (type of properties being assessed, specific sites being cleaned up, etc.)

Coalitions were not required to indicate the exact amounts for hazardous and petroleum funds being applied for, therefore the total amounts were included only as hazardous substances grants.

2011 Grants
The EPA announced $2.9 million in brownfield grant awards to seven Michigan applicants on June 6, 2011.  The list of awardees for the total $76 million in funding can be found on the EPA's website.The awardees are:

Montcalm County- $200,000 Hazardous Substances Assessment, $200,000 Petroleum Assessment
City of Inkster- $200,000 Hazardous Substances Assessment, $200,000 Petroleum Assessment
City of Albion- $200,000 Hazardous Substances Assessment
Lenawee County- $200,000 Hazardous Substances Cleanup
Northville Charter Township- $200,000 Hazardous Substances Cleanup
Downriver Community Conference Brownfield Consortium- $500,000 RLF Supplemental

The DEQ Remediation Division, Program Support Section provided letters of acknowledgement for 52 different applicants for the 2011 EPA brownfield grants, with the DEQ as an additional applicant.  Applicants requested a total of $24.2 million in funding, slightly less than the 58 applicants for the 2010 grant round who collectively submitted proposals for $28.884 million.  The table below shows the applicants and the amounts they requested, with the recipients and amounts highlighted.
