Geological Repositories and NGGDPP

Michigan has two public Geologic Repositories.

In KALAMAZOO is the Michigan Geological Repository for Research and Education (MGRRE) at Western Michigan University with an emphasis on Southern Peninsula geology.  Information about MGRRE can be found on-line at http://wst023.west.wmich.edu/MGRRE%20Website/mgrre.html

In MARQUETTE is the Northern Michigan Geological Repository which focuses on Northern Peninsula geology.   Access to these materials is by prior arrangement with Melanie A. Humphrey, Upper Peninsula District Office, DEQ, Office of Geological Survey, by telephone (906) 346-8566, or email humphrem@michigan.gov.

For general information about the Northern Michigan Geological Repository in Marquette please read http://www.deq.state.mi.us/documents/deq-ogs-gimdl-GGCF.PDF.  An inventory of the cores and samples at the Marquette Repository is on-line as http://www.michigan.gov/documents/deq/deq-ogs-gimdl-GGCI-2009-07-05_285190_7.pdf .  A tab delimited text version is available as  http://www.michigan.gov/documents/deq/deq-ogs-gimdl-GGCI-2009-07-05_285191_7.txt .

There are two major digital file sets that are available from the Office of Geological Survey.  For more information about digital geophysical logs go to the "RasterLogs" page.   For information about digital oil & gas permit well files go to the "Permit Well Files" page.

Michigan geologists are working with the U. S. Geological Survey as part of the The National Geological and Geophysical Data Preservation Program ( NGGDPP ) activities .  The NGGDPP is working to identify, catalog, and preserve a wide range of materials and data that support a wide range of activities, including, but not limited to:
  • Identifying new oil and gas and mineral deposits
  • Contributing to research on climate change
  • Addressing issues related to water quality
  • Enhancing the ability to identify geologic hazards
  • Supporting research on development of unconventional energy sources.

Further details about the NGGDPP can be found on-line at http://datapreservation.usgs.gov/

If you would like to donate geologic materials to this effort please contact either of the repositories.
