The Department of Environmental Quality has a huge web site, the State of Michigan an even bigger one, and sometimes it's hard to know where to begin looking. Help is available at the Environmental Assistance Center (EAC). There are experienced people there who know about programs and issues all across the board.

The Geological Survey deals with rocks, either mining them or mapping them (oil and gas can be thought of as mining liquids), but we don't do everything. For example, sand and gravel mining is generally regulated by the townships. We are making every effort to put all our information on the internet. We hope that by October 2006, even well files and well logs will be available as digital images. If there is something you can't find on our pages, it's probably not managed by us. If you have questions about our programs, call our general number, 517-241-1515, to be directed to the right person.
If there is something which you think should be on the Geological Survey web pages, or if there are problems with the site, contact Roger S Nelson:
