The rules provide technical standards for UST systems including corrosion protection, release detection, spill and overfill protection, and compliance and reporting schedules for each type of requirement. These rules also provide financial responsibility requirements applicable to owners and operators, including governmental entities, of UST systems.
The rules also have special requirements for new UST systems installed in approved delineated wellhead protection areas.
To assist in the use of the rules, the adopted federal language has been compiled with the state rules into one document. The Michigan language and amendments to the federal regulations appear in standard print and the original federal language appears in boldface print.
The rules were filed with the Secretary of State on December 18, 1998, and became effective January 2, 1999.
The secondary containment amendments to the Michigan Underground Storage Tank Rules (MUSTR) required by the Federal Energy Act of 2005, became effective June 27, 2008.
