Creating a map for HEC-HMS using GIS

Contact:  Dave Fongers 517-373-0210

ArcView can be used to create a map for the Hydrologic Engineering Center's Hydrologic Modeling System (HEC-HMS). To do this, you will need to download the conversion files (920 Kb Zip), extract and save them to a folder, and follow the instructions below.

To add a map to HMS using ArcView:

  1. Create a View that has a watershed delineation polygon theme and a river/stream/drain line theme.
  2. From the File drop-down menu, export the View as CGM Clear Text.
  3. Place the file in a root directory to make step 4 easier (example c:).
  4. Start ARCHMS.EXE.
  5. Specify name and location of CGM file (example c:arcmap).
  6. Specify name and location of map file to be created (example c:hmsmap).
  7. Move the map file to the desired location.
  8. Start HEC-HMS.
  9. Open the basin model.
  10. Go to File, Basin Model Attributes.
  11. Select the Files tab.
  12. Specify the map file location.
