Tom is President of Prein&Newhof, a civil and environmental engineering firm he co-founded in 1969. Prein&Newhof has offices in Grand Rapids, Byron Center, Holland, Kalamazoo, and Muskegon, as well as an environmental laboratory in Grand Rapids.
Tom continues to serve as Project Manager and Principal-in-Charge of many of the firm's environmental and civil engineering projects. His expertise is in the planning and design of water and wastewater treatment systems, including intakes, pipelines, pumping stations, and treatment plants. He has experience in many areas of civil engineering, including storm drainage and flood control, airport improvements, roads and streets, and the site design of industrial parks, residential plats, and condominiums.
Tom is a graduate of Calvin College, holding a Bachelor of Arts degree, and a graduate of the University of Michigan, holding a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering and a Master of Science degree in Sanitary Engineering. He is a licensed professional engineer in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Illinois.
He has served as an adjunct professor at Calvin College, and a member of the Civil & Environmental Engineering Alumni Advisory Council at the University of Michigan. He was a founding member of the Global Enterprise for Water Technology.
In 2001, Tom received a National Community Service Award from the American Consulting Engineers Council. He was named Engineer of the Year in 1990 by the Michigan Society of Professional Engineers. He has received both the George Warren Fuller Award and the Raymond J. Faust Award from the American Water Works Association, Michigan Section. In 2005, he received a Distinguished Alumnus Merit Award from the University of Michigan College of Engineering.
Tom is an active member of the National Society of Professional Engineers, the American Water Works Association, the American Academy of Environmental Engineers, the American Society of civil Engineers, and the Water Environment Federation.
