Agency: Environmental Quality

January 14, 2010

The Department of Environmental Quality announced today that it will be accepting applications for the 2009 "Neighborhood Environmental Partners" (NEP) Awards. Facilities designated as Michigan Clean Corporate Citizens or participants in Michigan's Pollution Prevention Partnership Programs are eligible to apply.

"The NEP Program recognizes the importance of building active relationships between businesses and their neighbors to improve the local environment across Michigan," said DEQ Interim Director Jim Sygo. "This program allows companies to work hand and hand with their community to make lasting environmental improvements."

The DEQ's Clean Corporate Citizens and Pollution Prevention Partners can compete for a NEP Program Award by developing an environmental mission statement and completing environmental projects and/or initiatives in their community. Applications will be accepted February 1, through March 31, and the winners will be announced in June.

To assist interested participants, the DEQ has developed a Web site that has informational materials on the program requirements, along with ideas and illustrations of community-based environmental activities. For more information on the NEP Program, go to the DEQ Web site, at www.michigan.gov/deqnep, or call the DEQ, Environmental Assistance Center, at 1-800-662-9278.

Editor's note: DEQ news releases are available on the department's Internet home page at www.michigan.gov/deq.
