To provide service to business communities, the public and local units of government, pollution prevention may be integrated into compliance assistance programs that regulate drinking water sources through the Safe Drinking Water Act. These programs offer an opportunity to promote pollution prevention as a means to address environmental obligations that may impact the quality of local drinking water sources.
The Pollution Prevention Section of the Environmental Science and Services Division (ESSD) is working with the Wellhead Protection Unit of the Drinking Water and Radiological Protection to promote and enhance opportunities to implement P2 in Wellhead Protection Areas in Michigan.
The Michigan Wellhead Protection Program (WHPP) assists local communities using groundwater for their municipal drinking water supply systems in protecting their water source. A WHPP minimizes the potential for groundwater contamination by identifying, protecting and managing the area that contributes water to municipal water supply wells.
By providing businesses and communities with access to pollution prevention information they otherwise might not have, voluntary programs such as the Michigan Business Pollution Prevention Partnership and the Michigan Retired Engineer Technical Assistance Program offer assistance and opportunity to maintain and go beyond compliance with environmental regulations.
