Alternative fuels/Energy

Alternative Fueling Station Locator- This Station Locator displays public and private fueling stations that offer compressed natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas or propane, E85 ethanol, electric, biodiesel, hydrogen, and liquefied natural gas.

American Coalition for Ethanol- The American Coalition for Ethanol is a national, non-profit organization of ethanol producers, farmers, investors, commodity organizations, businesses supplying goods and services to the industry, rural electric cooperatives, and others supportive of the increased production and use of ethanol across America.  This website provides educational information about ethanol and related legislation for the general public and industry.

Cool Fuel Road Trip- A PBS television show recounting one man's journey across 30 states over 8 months using 12 alternative fuel sources.

DEQ Energy Efficiency Resources- The DEQ webpage provides information on various energy efficiency and energy conservation programs and resources for the public, private business and municipal government, including Michigan Energy Programs and initiatives, consumer and business information, federal government resources, and State of Michigan resources.

Department of Energy- This Department of Energy resource provides information on what ethanol is, how it is made, ethanol markets, and ethanol publications.

Great Lakes Renewable Energy Association- The Great Lakes Renewable Energy Association promotes renewable and alternative energy sources through education, manufacturing, marketing, sales, and use of alternative energy technologies. This website provides information about events and seminars as well as links to educational resources.

Michigan's Energy Office- The Energy Office promotes energy efficiency and renewable energy resource development to Michigan's residents, businesses and public institutions. Program activities include encouraging the use of new technologies and alternative fuels in buildings, industrial processes, vehicles, and power generation.

Michigan Soybean Association- The Michigan Soybean Association provides information on biodiesel as an alternative fuel source, the soybean suppliers list, and biodiesel suppliers list.

National Biodiesel Board- The National Biodiesel Board is a trade association representing the biodiesel industry. This website includes resources to the Fuel Quality Enforcement Guide, fuel fact sheets, a guide to buying biodiesel, and tax incentive information.

Nextenergy- NextEnergy is a nonprofit organization advocating environmentally-beneficial renewable and alternative energy/fuel technologies. This website provides state and national educational resources, news and events on alternative energy resources including hydrogen.

Chemicals

Cleaner Solutions Database- A simple single solution for solvent substitution for surface cleaning, the Surface Solution Laboratory (SSL) has created a database linking performance evaluations to specific testing parameters and environmental assessments based on the testing performed at the lab. You may also want to check out these other related web tools.

Environmental Protection Agency Environmentally Preferred Purchasing- Proper sanitation and cleaning are important for a healthy building environment. Some cleaning products, however, can contain harmful chemicals that contaminate the environment and endanger human health. Implementing "green cleaning" practices can reduce these health, safety, and environmental risks. Green cleaning involves selecting alternative products, using those products properly, and taking other steps to reduce risks while maintaining a satisfactory level of cleanliness and disinfection.

Green Chemicals Alternative Wizard - Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Green Chemical Alternatives Purchasing Wizard is a guided process that helps identify more environmentally benign chemicals and processes.

Green Cleaning University- Green Cleaning University is open to all interested persons including: manufacturers, distributors, service providers, building managers & owners, advocates, government officials and others. The mission of the organization is to transform the cleaning industry by providing education and resources for the future leaders of the Green Cleaning Revolution.

RTI International Coatings Guide- The Coatings Guide™ a pollution prevention tool for paints and coatings users. The Coatings Guide™ contains several tools to help users identify low-volatile organic compound/hazardous air pollutant coatings that may serve as drop-in replacements for existing coating operations.

Solvent Alternatives Guide- SAGE is a comprehensive guide designed to provide pollution prevention information on solvent and process alternatives for parts cleaning and degreasing. SAGE does not recommend any ozone depleting chemicals. SAGE was developed by the Contamination Control Programat RTI Internationalin cooperation with the U.S. EPA Air Pollution Prevention and Control Division(APPCD).

Local Government/Community

Eco-village Network of North America- Ecovillage network of the Americas works to promote sustainable development. The website includes a comprehensive search engine, an online magazine, and an online publications store.

EPA - Green Communities- This program highlights a 5-Step process for achieving community sustainability.  This website includes guidelines for creating community assessments, trend analysis, vision statements, sustainability action plans, implementation strategies, and provides links to additional resources about green communities, teacher/student resources, and identifying potential stakeholders.

The Green Institute- The Green Institute is a non-profit organization whose mission is "sustaining the environment and our communities through practical innovation". Their vision is shared by the thousands of people who donate and purchase quality reclaimed and green building materials, design and construct green buildings, generate clean energy, learn how to manage stormwater and landscape sustainably, and work together to conserve and restore our environment.

How to develop a Green Building Program - Green Resource Center- The city of Austin has developed one of the most successful utility-sponsored green building programs in the U.S.  This document includes information on strategies and lessons learned.

Institute for Local Self-Reliance (ILSR)- ILSR works to promote sustainable development by providing community environmental information and assistance on topics such as recycling, resource reduction and biofuels. This website includes information about the Waste to Wealth Project, the Healthy Building Network, the Carbohydrate Economy Clearinghouse, and related publications.

Local Government Environmental Assistance Network- The Local Government Environmental Assistance Network (LGEAN) provides environmental management, planning, funding, and regulatory information for local government, elected and appointed officials, managers and staff.  This website includes links to environmental topics, regulatory information, a resource organization database, a consultants directory, and related tools.

Peaks to Prairies Offers Online Resources for Residential Green Building- Peaks to Prairies, an extension service at Montana State University, promotes pollution prevention practices and works with citizens, small businesses, and local governments.  This website provides technical assistance, offering information on topics including but not limited to residential construction, community growth, auto body repair for outdoor recreation industries, and youth education.

Planning Commissioners- The Planning Commissioners Journal is a guide to web resources for planners, local officials, and other individuals/organizations concerned about urban growth and sprawl. It includes articles and links to other organizations.

Smart Communities Network - DOE- This website supplies information about sustainable development, including city case studies on topics such as land use planning, transportation, community energy, rural issues, and air quality.  This website also includes funding opportunities and model codes/ordinances used by other communities to implement sustainable development measures.

Smart Growth- The Environmental Protection Agency provides resources on smart growth topics, especially publications, grants and funding, news, and tools for implementing smart growth measures, and community partnership information.

Smart Growth On-line- The Smart Growth Network encourages long term solutions to unbridled development.  The website resources include fact sheets, a searchable database of reports, web links, related tools, and news.

Sustainable Communities Network- Sustainable communities network provides information about community sustainability such as smart growth, sustainable economy, natural resources protection, and sustainable lifestyle.  Resources include case studies, a calendar of events, a community action starter kit, the Sustainable Building Resource Directory, global warming fact sheets, and a list of partner organizations.

Other

Alliance for Environmental Technology- The Alliance for Environmental Technology (AET) is an international association of chemical manufacturers dedicated to improving the environmental performance of the pulp and paper industry. AET was created to establish a clearing house of educational and technical resources relating to Chlorine Dioxide and its use in papermaking.

Alliance for Sustainability- The Alliance works to bring about individual, organizational and planetary sustainability through projects that are ecologically sound, economically viable, socially just and humane. The website includes links to Manna E-Newsletter; Natural Step Framework; sustainable city and neighborhood initiatives; and spirituality and sustainability resources.

Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturers Association (BIFMA)- BIFMA's mission is to lead, advocate, inform and develop standards for the North American office and institutional furniture industry.

DEQ Environmental Assistance Program- The EAP is the one-stop shop for all of your environmental regulatory compliance needs. Whether it's direct one-on-one telephone assistance, producing training events, or developing plain English publications, staff from the major environmental protection programs provides timely and accurate information and assistance on a wide array of environmental topics.

DEQ Environmental Management System- EMS's are based on the International Organization for Standardization's environmental framework - ISO 14001:2004. The EMS creates an overall site specific management system that addresses environmental concerns through the allocation of resources, assignment of responsibilities, and ongoing evaluation of practices, procedures, and processes to achieve sound environmental performance.

Dictionary of Sustainable Management- The Dictionary of Sustainable Management is an online dictionary which is a project of the Presidio School of Management and features more than 250 sustainability terms. The Dictionary of Sustainable Management is an open dictionary for business leaders and students of sustainability and business-related terms.

EPA Newsletter- America is shifting to a "green culture" where all 300 million citizens are embracing the fact that environmental responsibility is everyone's responsibility. "Go Green!" is a monthly newsletter from the US EPA with information about activities and events that everyone can use to make a difference in their homes, communities, and offices.

Great Lakes Sanitary Supply Association> - The Great Lakes Sanitary Supply Association is made up of distributors, manufacturers, manufacturers representatives, contractors, in-house cleaning professionals, and others in the cleaning and cleaning supply industry. Objectives include: how to clean better, how to clean smarter, promote professionalism, provide safer and cleaner built environments, and to protect to the world we live in. The Green Chamber- The Green Chamber is a national organization that provides green companies and non-profits with interactive, state-of-the-art tools and sustainable community resources to improve their businesses and services through cooperation with like-minded organizations.

Greenbiz- GreenBiz provides news, information, and learning resources for businesses seeking to integrate environmental responsibility with profitability. Tools include expert advice, case studies, a directory of organizations offering technical assistance, and other resources. The website also includes a sustainability metric measuring corporate social responsibility also known as social footprint.

Green Construction and Demolition- The site has links for commercial and residential construction. The issues covered include air quality, brownfields, land use; stormwater, wetlands, solid waste and other issues related to construction and demolition.

Green Lodging- Green Lodging is a joint program through Michigan's Energy Office and the Department of Environmental Quality to establish environmental guidelines for the hospitality industry for natural resource conservation and pollution prevention. This voluntary program encourages hospitality facilities to adopt cost-saving and environmentally-friendly practices.

Green Suppliers Network - EPA- This network provides suppliers with tools and resources to save money, optimize resource use, and eliminate waste resulting in higher profits and fewer environmental impacts.

Recycle Ann Arbor- Recycle Ann Arbor offers the Environmental House Energy & Green Building Resource Center as a resource for green building, energy efficiency, and renewable energy information as well as a line of eco-friendly flooring options.

Retired Engineers' Technical Assistance Program(RETAP) - The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality makes Retired professionals available through the Retired Engineer Technical Assistance Program (RETAP) to assist Michigan businesses and institutions with pollution prevention. Each assessor has thirty to forty years of experience with Michigan industries. Businesses of 500 employees or fewer and institutions of any size are eligible.

Sustainable Guide- The Green Sustainable Guide is the how-to information resource for all sustainable living topics from organic gardening and composting to solar energy, home energy efficiency and more.

UHEAC- The Upland Hills Ecological Awareness Center is a non-profit organization located in Oxford, MI offering presentations, workshops, and events on topics such as ecology, sustainability, and renewable energy.

Urban Options- Urban Options, located in East Lansing, MI, is a nonprofit organization that provides educational programs about consumer environment and energy issues and demonstrations of ecologically-friendly home and yard improvements.

Warmtraining- WARM Training Center, located in Detroit, MI, promotes resource efficient, affordable, healthy homes and communities through education, training and technical assistance. Services offered include energy counseling, construction management services, and housing inspections.

Pollution Prevention

North Carolina Department of P2 and Environmental Assistance- The department protects the environment and conserves natural resources by providing technical assistance on the elimination, reduction, reuse and recycling of wastes and pollutants.

Pollution Prevention Regional Information Center- This is a topic-specific guide of collected resources accessible from a browser connection to the internet. The guide also serves P2 Specialists and their clients.

Restaurant Pollution Prevention- Michigan's Restaurant Pollution Prevention web page offers resources for food service to practice source reduction, reuse and recycling. This site includes publications to assist businesses in getting started on pollution prevention.

Sustainable Forestry Programs

Forest Resource Management- The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the State's natural resources for current and future generations.

Forestry Stewardship Council - Forestry Stewardship Council is a non-profit organization which encourages environmentally-sound forest management standards throughout the U.S. This website includes resources about certification, certifiers, and green building.

Michigan Association of Timbermen- The Michigan Association of Timbermen is a non-profit trade organization promoting Michigan's     forest products, industry, and sustainable forestry. This website includes links to news, educational resources, and training opportunities.

Sustainable Forestry Education- Sustainable Forestry Education is a Michigan State University resource offering educational opportunities for Michigan's forestry industry. This website includes a calendar of upcoming events throughout Michigan and the    Midwest.

Sustainable Forestry Initiative- The Sustainable Forestry Initiative is a system of principles, objectives, and performance measures developed to promote environmentally responsible forest management practices.  This website includes information about SFI labeling criteria and related resources.

Water

Michigan Water Environment Association- The Michigan Water Environment Association is a non-profit organization made up of professionals and practitioners who work with Michigan's water environment.

Michigan Watershed Information- The Michigan Watershed Homepage offers information and education materials to help local watershed groups and communities protect and improve Michigan's lakes and streams. There is information on watershed education, a Watershed Management Definition, links to watershed information on other sites, links to existing watershed organizations in Michigan, and Michigan's innovative watershed-based storm water permit.

Nonpoint Source- Michigan's Nonpoint Source Program assists local units of government, non-profit entities, and other partners to manage stormwater statewide through watershed management plans including the use of best management practices, land use planning activities, and engineering review of site plans.

U.S. Department of Interior Bureau of Reclamation- Reclamation's primary role is water resource management.  More efficient water use is a key component of Reclamation's water resource management strategy.

WaterWiser The Water Efficiency Clearinghouse- The clearing house promotes efficient watering practices, technologically advanced irrigation products, and water conservation. Includes information on water-saving products, practices and services.
