Computer Programs

Purdue University and U.S. EPA Region 5 established the Center for Technology Transfer and Pollution Prevention at the Purdue University Agricultural Engineering Department in 1992. The Center provides Environmental Ambassadors with the tools necessary to transfer technical information about the environment and agricultural pollution prevention worldwide. From an Ag P2 perspective, the Center develops and evaluates new computer-based agricultural pollution prevention and technology transfer opportunities.

AGPP: Agricultural Pollution Prevention
Interactive hypertext format and numerous color graphic screens show how farmers can save money and reduce pollution by sensible use of fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides. An important field was prepared by real farmers suitable for farmers, homesteaders, cooperative extension services, students, and environmental professionals.  up

EACASE: Environmental Assessment Case Study
Companion piece to the 1992 Environmental Assessment Resource Guide. Takes real-life example of environmental impact assessment and leads through environmental assessment process. Enhanced with maps, photos, interviews, and simulated flyovers of project area. The Case Study links to the Resource Guide, and contains workbook-style exercises and a notebook for the user to record notes. Provides a solid foundation in environmental assessment.  up

ENERGY: Residential Energy Efficiency
Shows effective ways to reduce home energy consumption through insulation, windows, doors, weather-stripping, and caulking. Expert system feature allows users to calculate how much saved with efficient energy. Enter information about home and intended energy-saving changes and the program uses local utility and climate data to calculate savings in money, energy, and reduction of pollutants. Useful for general public to utility managers.  up

EROSION: Best Management Practices for Soil Erosion
Uses graphics and hypertext to provide soil erosion information, provided about severity of erosion worldwide, in the U.S. and in Midwest. Types of water erosion described and illustrated with detailed descriptions of management and structural practices to control erosion.  up

FARMFERT: Fertilizer Storage and Handling Practices on the Farm
Hypertext-based program gives general overview of fertilizer handling and storage, featuring risk assessment section, and recommendations for correcting fertilizer storage problems.  up

FARMFUEL: Fuel Storage Practices on the Farm
Hypertext and color graphics provide overview of importance and techniques of proper fuel storage. Risk assessment prompts the user to describe how petroleum products are stored and evaluates safety of these practices and provides detailed information about any problems discovered through the questionnaire.  up

FARMPEST: Pesticide Storage and Handling Pratices on the Farm
Graphics and hypertext explain proper handling and storage of pesticides on farmsteads. Software provides general overview of pesticide handling and storage, risk assessment section, and recommendations for correcting problems related to pesticide storage.  up

FARMSITE: Soil and Geologic Site Evaluation
Software uses hypertext and graphics to provide information about the role soils, geology and depth to groundwater play in the protection of groundwater. Risk assessment portion determines contamination potential at site based on user-supplied information.  up

GWPRIMER: Ground Water Primer
HTML update to original program educates about nature of ground water and the principles of groundwater protection. Contains detailed introduction to hydrogeology, information on numerous drinking water contaminants, and a section on protecting your ground water; can learn about ground water protection programs in EPA and other government agencies, and find EPA contacts and hotline numbers.  up

HWASTE: Household Waste Management
HTML program teacheshow to safely and efficiently manage waste, particularly hazardous waste, in the home. Visit a 'virtual house' and learn about products encountered there. Safe homemade alternatives presented and evaluated. State-by-state database of mail, telephone, and Internet contacts puts provides free downloadable publications. Includes over 30 quizzes and activities for K-12 students, sorted by grade level.  up

MILK: Milking Center Wastewater Treatment
Special problems posed by milkhouse wastewater considered in hypertext tutorial with color graphics exploring designs of milking facility for cleaning management, determining strength and volume of effluent flow, and devising facilities to receive, treat, and safely dispose of wastewater. Risk assessment questionnaire evaluates the soundness of situation and suggests improvements.  up

ONSITE: Principles and Design of Onsite Waste Disposal with Septic Systems
Instructional program uses 80 color graphic screens and animation to teach on-site treatment basics (septic tanks, drainfields, mounds, water conservation, etc.). Includes: principles of treatment, design, and siting, soil basics and water conservation. Consists of two tutorials; one entirely text oriented, for monochrome ASCII text PCs, and one requiring EGA graphics display capabilities and a hard disk.  up

OZONE: Stratospheric Ozone Depletion
Program includes information and graphics depicting the ozone layer, how ozone is created, causes and effects of ozone depletion, the ozone hole, the greenhouse effect, and prevention of ozone depletion. Program examines applicable government legislation, including portions of the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990.  up

PESTREGS: 1992 Worker Protection Standards
Hypertext program presents the 1992 pesticide applicator regulations in easy-to-follow format with information pertaining to workers, handlers, ag employers, handler employers, owners, or all of the above.  up

PREVENT: Pollution Prevention
Program outlines the relevant environmental legislation and addresses pollution prevention in industry, agriculture, energy, government, and consumer sectors. Examples include more efficient manufacturing processes, alternative products and procedures generating less or more benign end products and ways to reduce the amount of raw materials.  up

PRIVATE: Private Water Systems
Interactive hypertext format and dozens of color screens provide complete mini-course in design and construction of private drinking water systems (wells and piping). Includes water quantities required, water pumps, systems controls, design considerations and piping. Equivalent to a 200-page book.  up

SUFWAT: Surface Water Education System
Includes general overview importance and quantity of surface water, detailed look at this resource for Indiana, and a discussion of how surface water becomes contaminated. Hypertext and numerous photos and graphics illustrate extensive discussion of agricultural best management practices to protect surface water resources.  up

WASTE: Livestock Waste Storage
Program looks at livestock manure as potential ground and surface water pollutants. Hypertext and color graphics explains factors affecting manure properties, and the effects of water pollution on humans and animals. Questionnaire evaluates risk associated with current practices and suggests solutions. Contains complete tutorial on manure handling, collection, stabilization through biological treatment, storage systems, land application and other uses, and avoiding hazards.  up

WATCON: Residential Water Conservation Techniques
Color graphic screens and animation show effective ways to save water inside and outside the house. Topics include efficient toilets, showerheads, faucets; leak detection, water efficient lawn care and gardening; car washing and pool operation. Expert system feature calculates potential savings of installing water efficient devices in homes. Useful for general public to utility managers.  up

WETLANDS: Wetland Education System
Learn definition and classification of wetlands, what types of plants and wildlife are common to wetlands and the importance of the wetland ecosystems in flood and erosion control, water purification and groundwater recharge. Digitized photographs and hypertext used extensively to illustrate different wetland types from bog to swamp. up

YARDS: Livestock Yards Management
Program gives overview of manure types and proper management systems for different animals including cattle, swine, sheep, poultry, and horses. Evaluate risk through the interactive questionnaire and receive suggestions for reducing the threat to water supply. up
