The P2 RETAP Internship Program is a partnership between the Department of Environmental Quality, Michigan institutions of higher education, the Retired Engineer Technical Assistance Program, and businesses. Engineering students are placed in small to medium size Michigan companies to work on projects that integrate P2 practices and technologies into manufacturing operations. DEQ compensates the interns.
For purposes of this program, Pollution Prevention is defined as the practice of minimizing the generation of waste at the source and, when wastes cannot be prevented, utilizing environmentally sound on-site or off-site recycling.
The P2 internship program provides students an opportunity to gain valuable work experience and knowledge outside the classroom. Internships are normally three-months during the summer, and students are compensated according to their class standing. Eligible businesses receive free technical assistance to carryout a P2 project that reduces waste, increases process efficiency, and/or saves money while contributing to a student’s education and serving as a mentor. To apply, fill out a P2 Project Proposal (pdf).
