Notification of Winners and Judge Selection

Contact:  Dale Copedge 517-335-0383
Agency: Environmental Quality

Notification Of Winners
Winners will be notified by August 30, 2008 prior to the official public announcement in September 2008.  The four competition award category winners will be presented a check up to $2000, and certificates will be presented to individual(s) who have contributed to the research, development, or implementation of the green chemistry/engineering project.

Judge Selection
The DEQ will solicit individuals from industry, Michigan institutions of higher learning, trade associations, environmental consulting firms, and environmental government agencies to particpate as judges for the competitons.  Selection of judges will depend on their expertise and background in the area of green chemistry, green engineering, green design, sustainability, and pollution prevention.

Seletected judges will be placed in teams of four to five members, each having an expertise in different areas that govern the competition.  A breif workshop will be held to normalize the scoring between the teams.  Each team will be sent a package of three to four design projects that they will review and score on a determined scale.  The packages will be returned and the scores recorded by DEQ staff.  Up to 15 applicants will be given invitations to participate in the second round of the competition, where the applicants will have to give up to a 20 minute presentation to a second panel/team of judges.  Teams and or judges that reviewed and scored on the written portion of the applicant's project will not be allowed to score the applicant on their presentations.  A combined score will determine the winner of each design project category.  An overall winner will also be determined for the competition.  This will be determined by independent scoring from all of the judges.
