Request for Papers, Forms and Deadlines

Contact:  Dale Copedge 517-335-0383
Agency: Environmental Quality

A request for design projects summaries will be posted at Michigan institutions of higher learning with accredited chemistry and engineering programs, which solicit chemistry and engineering students to submit design projects that incorporate the 12 principles of green chemistry and green engineering that were complete in the previous year.

For purposes of this competition, green chemistry means chemistry and chemical engineering to design chemical products and processes that reduce or eliminate the use or generation of hazardous substances, while producing high quality products through safe and efficient manufacturing processes. Green engineering means the design, commercialization, and use of processes and products that are feasible and economical while minimizing: 1) generation of pollution at the source; and 2) risk to human health and the environment. Green engineering embraces the concept that decisions to protect human health and the environment can have the greatest impact and cost effectiveness when applied early to the design and development phase of a process or product. We also define design projects as reports that have been reviewed by faculty that have addressed an industrial problem; researched a hypothesis, hypothetical, or anomaly; transferred an accepted technology to a new system where it is deemed uncommon; retrofitted a common practice to be more efficient; or simplified a technology or best practice using green chemistry or green engineering systems. The design project must facilitate commercial or theoretical green technologies that can be adopted into the industry.

Submission Deadlines, Dates and Times
Applications can be submitted electronically or by U.S. mail; if paper submittion, the applicant must submit three copies. Submissions must be received by the DEQ no later than 4:00 p.m. Eastern standard time on the solicitation closing date. It should be noted that the schedule may be changed without prior notification because of factors not anticipated at the time of announcement. Applicants are notified about evaluation decisions within six months of the solicitation closing date and awards are generally made three months after the solicitation closing date. Because of security concerns, paper applications cannot be personally delivered. Applications must be sent through U.S. mail, express mail, or a major courier. Note: regular U.S. mail deliveries are often delayed, so regular mail is not a reliable method for a timed delivery.  Mail completed form to: Green Chemistry Design Awards Competition, Mr. Dale Copedge, MDEQ-ESSD, PO Box 30457, Lansing, MI  48909-7957
