Climate Registries and GHG Trading Programs

The Climate Registry
The Climate Registry is an effort to unify existing U.S. state and regional registries also founded on the GHG Protocol and facilitated by WRI. These include the California Climate Action Registry, the first state-level corporate GHG registry in the U.S. with current participation from 300 reporting companies, and the Eastern Climate Registry, a joint project of several Northeast states. The Climate Registry represents the joint efforts of California and the Northeast, together with states in the Midwest, Western, and Southeast U.S., to create a single unified greenhouse gas emissions registry, supported by states, provinces, and tribes across North America.

Chicago Climate Exchange (CCX)
Chicago Climate Exchange (CCX) is North America's only and the world's first global marketplace for integrating voluntary legally binding emissions reductions with emissions trading and offsets for all six greenhouse gases. CCX is a U.S. corporation, and today remains the only emissions reduction and trading system for all six greenhouse gases and the only operational emissions reduction and trading system in North America. CCX has nearly 300 Members from all sectors and Offset Projects worldwide.

European Climate Exchange (ECX)
The European Climate Exchange (ECX) manages the marketing and product development for ECX Carbon Financial Instruments (ECX CFIs), listed and admitted to trading on the ICE Futures Europe's electronic platform. ECX / ICE Futures Europe is the most liquid platform for carbon emissions trading, attracting over 85% of the exchange-traded volume in the European carbon market. ECX CFI Contract include standardised futures and options based on EU Allowances (EUAs) and Certified Emission Reductions (CERs). More than 90 leading businesses have signed up for membership to trade ECX products. In addition, several thousand ICE clients can access the emissions market daily via banks and brokers.

ECX is a member of the Climate Exchange Plc group of companies. Other member companies include the Chicago Climate Exchange (CCX) and the Chicago Climate Futures Exchange (CCFE). Climate Exchange Plc (CLE) is listed on the AIM market of the London Stock Exchange.

The European Union Emission Trading System (EU ETS)
The European Union Greenhouse Gas Emission Trading Scheme (EU ETS) commenced operation as the largest multi-country, multi-sector Greenhouse Gas emission trading scheme world-wide. The scheme is based on Directive 2003/87/EC, which entered into force on 25 October 2003.
