The Michigan Office of the Great Lakes announced $501,700 in Coastal Zone Management grants awarded to 10 coastal communities, nonprofit organizations, state agencies and universities for projects to protect Michigan’s Great Lakes. These grants enhance public access to coastal areas, encourage stewardship through beach clean-up programs, promote public safety at beaches and support local and regional waterfront redevelopment plans.

Funding for the program is provided, in part, by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration through a state and federal partnership established in the Coastal Zone Management Act of 1972.

The Michigan Coastal Zone Management Program provides grant funds to assist in the development of vibrant and resilient coastal communities through the protection and restoration of our sensitive coastal resources and biologically diverse ecosystems. The program aims to promote wise management of the cultural and natural resources within our coastal boundary by fostering environmental stewardship, furthering research to support science-based policies and regulations, and providing public access to Great Lakes waters and habitats.
