The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) announced today the availability of grant applications for the fiscal year 2014 Scrap Tire Cleanup Grant Program (Program) authorized by Part 169, Scrap Tires, of the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act, 1994 PA 451, as amended.

Property owners with abandoned scrap tires or scrap tires at collection sites are eligible for funding assistance. The DEQ will give priority to funding activities at collection sites where the scrap tires were accumulated prior to January 1, 1991, and collection sites that pose an imminent threat to public health, safety, welfare, or the environment. Selected grantees will be reimbursed only for approved expenses as authorized in a contract between the grantee and the DEQ. The grantee will be responsible for the cost of loading the tires.

Grantees proposing to use a scrap tire processor must use an approved Michigan scrap tire processor that is capable of meeting the requirements specified in the application.

Eligible owners, authorized end-users, or local governments may request an application package by writing to the Scrap Tire Regulatory Program, Office of Waste Management and Radiological Protection, DEQ, P.O. Box 30241, Lansing, Michigan 48909-7741, or by downloading the form from the DEQ Web site at http://www.michigan.gov/deq (click on “Waste,” “Scrap Tires,” and under “Grants,” click on “Scrap Tire Cleanup Grant Information”), or by calling 517-284-6588. For additional information on the Program, please contact Mr. Michael Marshall, Scrap Tire Regulatory Program, at 517 284-6586.

The deadline for receipt of Program applications is 5:00 p.m., Eastern Daylight Savings Time, October 25, 2013.  The DEQ will accept applications with all supporting documentation that are postmarked on or before October 25, 2013.
