DEQ Mission

MISSION STATEMENT

The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality promotes wise management of Michigan's air, land, and water resources to support a sustainable environment, healthy communities, and vibrant economy.

  • Protect public health
  • Improve the quality of air, land and water resources
  • Reduce untreated sewage discharges to waters of the state
  • Employ effective risk management and increase redevelopment at Brownfield and other contaminated properties
  • Increase recycling and reuse of waste
  • Restore beneficial uses in the Great Lakes Areas of Concern
  • Reduce uses and releases of mercury and other harmful contaminants
  • Reduce the introduction and spread of aquatic invasive species to and from the Great Lakes
  • Increase staff training and professional development opportunities
  • Improve the perception and understanding of the DEQ
  • Secure long-term stable funding
