DEQ announces Earth Day poster contest winners

As a part of this year's Department of Environmental Quality Earth Day Celebration, DEQ Director Dan Wyant will honor the winners of the 2012 Earth Day poster contest. The contest has raised environmental awareness to students Kindergarten through 5th grade from all over Michigan by giving them an opportunity to design a poster explaining what they believe Earth Day is about.

This year, more than 4,500 posters were submitted and 12 winners were selected, 1st and 2nd place from each grade. Participant posters will decorate the walls of DEQ Headquarters at Constitution Hall in Lansing during Earth Day, and a ceremony will honor the 12 winners.

The winners are:

Kindergarten 

1st Place:         Sarah Busen                            St. Patrick School, Carleton, MI

2nd Place:        John Illes                                 St. Patrick School, Carleton, MI

 

1st Grade

1st Place:         Mariam Yousif                         Oakridge Elementary, Royal Oak, MI

2nd Place:        Karen Gadon                           Garfield Elementary, Wyandotte, MI

 

2nd Grade

1st Place:         Clayton Roof                            St. Patrick School, Carleton, MI

2nd Place:        Alberto Naccarato                    St. Gerard School, Lansing, MI

 

3rd Grade

1st Place:         Mia Brown                               St. Gerard School, Lansing, MI

2nd Place:        Christina Thieu                         St. Gerard School, Lansing, MI

 

 

4th Grade

1st Place:         Lucy Broadwell                        Green Acres Elementary, Warren, MI

2nd Place:        Jack Ford                                St. John the Evangelist, Fenton, MI

 

5th Grade

1st Place:         Anthony Abner, Jr.       MacArthur K-8 University Academy, Southfield, MI

2nd Place:        Alandra Asmar                        Harwood Elementary, Sterling Heights, MI
