Air Monitoring Overview

The Air Quality Division operates a comprehensive air monitoring network to determine the quality of Michigan's ambient (i.e., outside) air.  This network consists of meteorological, gaseous, particle and air toxics monitors mandated by the US Environmental Protection Agency in 40 CFR, Part 58 as part of the Michigan State Implementation Plant (SIP).  The data from these monitors are used to demonstrate attainment with the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS), to provide the public with real-time air quality measurements, track air quality trends and to assist in the development of air pollution abatement strategies.
