Specialized Sampling

The Superfund Section contains the only staff in the DEQ who are trained to administer specialized sampling services (e.g. drum and abandoned container sampling).  This requires training and certification in the use of Level B (supplied air) and Level C (respirator) personal protective equipment and a higher degree of medical monitoring.  These specialized sampling services are provided on a statewide basis to the entire Remediation and Redevelopment (RRD) including district offices, the Office of Criminal Investigations, and other divisions in the department as requested.

Field Sampling and Instrumentation Support

The Superfund section has expertise with numerous field instruments and sampling devices that are used in support of section investigations.   In particular, these equipment have been used: to collect groundwater samples to define contaminant plume extent and discharge zone at the groundwater/surface-water interface, to perform field-screening chemical analyses of groundwater samples using colorimetric methods, to perform field-screening analysis of soil samples using x-ray fluorescence methods, and to monitor water levels during complex aquifer-performance or single-well hydraulic conductivity tests. This equipment and expertise may also be used in support of investigations conducted by staff in RRD district offices or other divisions within DEQ, as requested.

Field Technician Services

The section provides Field Technician Services on a statewide basis.  Although the majority of the field technician work is provided in support of section activities, technical staff also provide services to RRD district offices and other divisions, as requested.  Field capabilities include completion of soil borings, temporary monitor wells, and permanent monitor wells; as well as monitor well sampling, vertical aquifer sampling, site surveys, and collection of air monitoring samples.   Technicians regularly provide oversight and split sampling services for various activities including remedial investigation/feasibility studies (RI/FS), remedial design (RD)/RA, and O&M as well as Part 201 activities.  They also provide training to RRD staff on proper use of sampling equipment and sampling techniques.

Geoprobe

The Superfund section has a truck-mounted Geoprobe that is used in support of section investigations.  The Geoprobe may also be used in support of investigations conducted by staff in RRD district offices or other divisions within DEQ, as requested.  The Geoprobe has the capability of completing soil borings, collecting soil and groundwater samples with depth, and installing temporary and permanent monitoring wells.
