  • Lake Michigan Introduction Lake Michigan, the second largest Great Lake (by volume) and fifth largest lake in the world (by surface area), is a globally significant ecosystem. Stretching over 300 miles north to south, it is the only Great Lake located entirely within the United States. Its shoreline boasts a variety of coastal habitats, including unique coastal wetlands, drowned river mouths, hundreds of smaller tributaries and more than 700 islands.
