Program Overview

  • Academy Hall Community Justice Center is a low secure placement servicing delinquent and neglected males between the ages of 15-21.
  • Academy Hall CJC's major goal is to instill the importance of responsible behavior in all aspects of youths' lives, especially relationships, employment, and education.
  • Academy Hall prepares youth for their return to a less structured setting in their home communities or an independent living setting.

Relationships

Youths are encouraged to develop positive relationships with family members, staff, peers, teachers, advocates, employers, and caseworkers.

  • Home visits with family.
  • Treatment planning with youth, family, advocates.
  • Staff supervised group activities/outings.

Employment

  • Youths are required to turn in weekly work reports and weekly budgets.
  • Onsite employment coordinator.
  • Employment training/services available through Michigan Works, Goodwill, and Michigan Rehabilitation Services.

Education

Academy Hall offers a variety of educational opportunities. Youths are encouraged to make academic improvements.

  • Onsite education coordinator.
  • High school and G.E.D. opportunities available through Kalamazoo Public Schools.
  • Secondary educational opportunities available through Kalamazoo Valley Community College, Wright's Beauty Academy, and Western Michigan University.

Counseling

  • Academy Hall staff provide reality-based counseling and crisis intervention.
  • Therapy and psychiatric services are available through Kalamazoo Psychology and local psychiatrist, Dr. Mediratta.
  • Youths with histories of substance abuse issues attend 12 step recovery meetings within the community.
  • Mandatory drug and alcohol testing.

Life Skills

Staff at Academy Hall assist youths in the development of essential life skills in the areas of:

  • Personal hygiene.
  • Money management.
  • Vehicles and driving.
  • Medicine and health.
  • Housing standards.
  • Personal paperwork.
  • Community resources.

Independent Living Opportunities

Academy Hall works with Holy Cross Children's Services to provide transitional services to youths entering community based placements.

Specialized Staff

  • Staff trained in Mechancial Advantage Control Holds and Life Space Crisis Intervention.
  • Staff in 12 step recovery program.
  • Reintegration specialist possessing a M.S.W.
