Wilderness Component

Nokomis is recognized as Michigan's leading provider of effective high impact wilderness treatment!

  • On campus high and low ropes courses, climbing wall and experiential learning elements.
  • Camping, rock climbing, canoeing, hiking, backpacking, cross country skiing.
  • Youths are responsible for meal planning, carrying their supplies, setting up camp, working in groups, handling conflict and physical challenges.
  • Master's level therapists employ wilderness environment to teach social skills, problem solving, relationship building.

Program Overview

Nokomis offers the most comprehensive care package available!

  • Youths are placed in treatment groups of 10 with 20 youths to a floor.
  • Each floor has two group leaders and one masters level program manager.
  • Treatment groups utilize an eclectic approach to counseling with emphasis on cognitive behavioral therapy.
  • Individualized therapy consisting of EMDR and neurobiofeedback focuses on issues of trauma, ADHD and mood disorders.
  • Weekly on campus AA meeting.
  • Each treatment program is individually designed.
  • Focus on family involvement.
  • Campus wide Balanced and Restorative Justice programming.
  • Medical and dental clinic on campus.
  • Religious and spiritual enrichment programs.

Location

Nokomis Challenge Center is located in north central Michigan, 4 miles south of Houghton Lake on Reserve Road. When traveling north on I75, take exit 227 and follow M55 west to Reserve Road. Nokomis is located in a beautiful natural wooded area on the shore of Pup Lake.
