Substance Abuse - 20 beds - male ages 12 to 20

  • Addiction treatment for chronic substance abuse.
  • Group and Individual therapy, Experiential Activities, EMDR, Neuro-Biotherapy, Cognitive Behavioral Treatment, Psychiatric Consultation.
  • Masters level therapist
  • Certified Addictions Counselor

General Offender - 20 beds - male ages 12 to 20

  • Group and Individual therapy, Experiential Activities, EMDR, Neuro-Biotherapy, Cognitive Behavioral Treatment, Psychiatric Consultation.
  • Masters level therapist.

Academics:  Nokomis is committed to Educational Excellence.

  • All classes meet Michigan core curriculum benchmarks and standards.
  • G.E.D. program.
  • Academic high school credits.
  • On-line college courses available for eligible youths.
  • Vocational planning and transition program.
  • Specific resource classrooms for Title I students.
  • Certified special education teachers and courses.
  • Regular physical conditioning.

Wilderness Component: Nokomis is recognized as Michigan's leading provider of effective high impact wilderness treatment.

  • On campus high and low ropes courses, climbing wall and experiential learning elements.
  • Higher level youth may participate, with court approval, in wilderness experiences aimed at assessing and directing part of their transition process.
  • Master's level wilderness instructor therapist.

Program Overview: Nokomis offers the most comprehensive care package available.

  • Youths are placed in treatment groups of 10 with 20 youths to a floor.
  • Each floor has two masters level  Group Leaders.
  • Treatment groups utilize an eclectic approach to counseling with emphasis on cognitive behavioral therapy.
  • Individualized therapy consisting of EMDR and Neuro-Biotherapy focuses on issues of trauma, ADHD and mood disorders.
  • Weekly on campus AA meeting.
  • Daily treatment group meetings.
  • Individually designed treatment program.
  • Focus on family involvement.
  • Campus wide Balanced and Restorative Justice programming.
  • Medical and dental clinic on campus.
  • Religious and spiritual enrichment programs.
  • Education standards that meet the Michigan Core Curriculum Benchmarks.

Location:  Nokomis Challenge Center is located in north central Michigan, 4 miles south of Houghton Lake on Reserve Road.  Nokomis is located in a beautiful natural wooded area on the shore of Pup Lake.
