"Assisted Living"

"Assisted Living" is used as a marketing term in Michigan. Because the term is not legally defined in Michigan, any operation, regardless of the services they may or may not provide, may call themselves an "Assisted Living Facility", "Assisted Living Complex", or any other use of those terms. However, some of our licensed adult foster care homes and homes for the aged also call themselves "Assisted Living." In addition, some facilities, licensed and unlicensed, use the terms "assisted living" or "assistive living" to designate a specific level of care provided within the facility.

Long-term care settings other than traditional nursing homes may use a variety of other terms to describe themselves such as "housing with services establishment", "continuing care community", "senior independent living", "senior living community", "senior housing and care", any of which may or may not be required by law to be licensed.

Refer to The Michigan Office of Services to the Aging website for additional information regarding assisted living.
