Benefits to Retailers

The EBT program eliminates handling paper food stamp coupons and paper checks by using an on-line system similar to commercial debit Point-Of-Sale (POS) services. With EBT, debit and credit transactions are completed by swiping the Michigan Bridge Card on a small device, usually located at the checkout lane. State-provided ‘EBT only’ POS equipment is available without expense to the retailer. Other options include installing POS equipment or adapting the retailer's current device. Minimal training is required and includes written materials. In addition, a toll free retailer help line is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • Cost Reduction – The costs of handling and processing Food Stamp coupons is reduced for the retailer.

  • Increased Safety – There are no redeemed stamps to be lost or stolen.

  • Benefit Delivery – Benefits to DHS clients are automated and available for use by the recipient regardless of the day of the week.

  • Electronic Settlement – Reimbursement funds for food assistance benefits and cash purchases will be settled directly to the retailer’s bank account through an Automated Clearing House (ACH).
