The December 1999 Achiever of the Month Award was presented to Joleen McGeshick of Gogebic. Joleen McGeshick turned to the Gogebic County FIA for assistance in 1997. At that time she was unemployed, without heat and facing possible eviction from her home. Despite the gravity of her situation, Joleen was hesitant about coming to the FIA. It was very difficult for her to accept that she needed assistance.
Over the years this single mother of two has worked at a variety of part-time jobs to provide for her family. However, it had been difficult for her to find employment that paid her enough to make ends meet. Through the Gogebic County FIA Joleen received emergency sh assistance for rent and utilities as well as funds for car repairs. Family Independence Program (FIP) assistance, Food Stamps, Medicaid and day care were also provided.
Joleen’s family is very supportive, continually providing emotional support and practical assistance whenever it is needed. They supplied day care and transportation services regularly, often driving her to job interviews. In February 1997, Joleen was referred to the Work First program. Shortly after orientation she found a part-time job. Joleen’s FIP case closed in February 1998, due to the earnings of her children’s father. Both parents’ income is considered when determining cash assistance grants. In January 1999 Joleen signed up for a training program with the Lac Vieux Desart Resort/Casino. In spring of that same year the casino hired her to fill a dealer’s position. She continues to work there today.
