October’s Achiever of the Month Award was presented to Pamela Montgomery of Detroit. She came to the Family Independence Agency for assistance in September 1997. She was experiencing financial difficulties and worried about providing for her daughter and niece. Through the Schoolcraft/Stansbury District, she received Family Independence Program (FIP) funds, Food Stamps and Medicaid to help make ends meet.
In October 1997, through an independent job search, Pamela found employment as a salesclerk at Hudson’s. Although she enjoyed the work, she was not interested in a full-time sales career. Her lifelong dream was to become a nurse.
Pamela was enrolled in the nursing program at Wayne State University. She faced many challenges, but was determined to succeed. For several years she juggled work, classes, studying and child care to pursue her registered nursing certification. Academic scholarships and school covered most of her expenses and at one point she even worked two jobs. When the work requirements for FIP recipients were increased, Pamela was not sure how she would fulfill the new work provisions and complete her nursing clinicals. She discussed her situation with her Family Independence Specialist and her case was deferred.
In July 1999, Pamela graduated from Wayne State with a degree as a registered nurse, specializing in critical care. Today she works at Harper Hospital as a critical care unit nurse. Pamela’s financial assistance case closed in September 1999 because of excess earnings. Currently, she is receiving transitional Medicaid.
