| Sandra Adam |
The March 1999 Achiever of the Month Award was presented to Sandra Adam of Kent County. Sandra Adam is the single mother of two children, a son, aged 7 and a daughter, aged 2. She came to the Family Independence Agency (FIA) for assistance in 1991 after a divorce left her in financial difficulties and a high-risk pregnancy made it impossible for her to work. Through the Wayne County FIA she received Aid for Dependent Children and Medicaid. Sandra continued on assistance for the next seven years. During this period she worked at various jobs; she was employed to do housekeeping, worked at K-mart and also McDonald's. The lack of a high school diploma limited her job search and made reaching economic independence more difficult. Although Sandra had been raised on assistance, she did not want to leave that same legacy for her children. She was determined to find a way to get off assistance.
In March 1998, Sandra was involved in a serious auto accident. She had severe injuries and once again was unable to work. Despite being worried about the future she decided this was an opportunity to make a new start. A relative had property in Otsego so, she and her family moved there. In June 1998, her case was transferred to the Otsego County FIA. Sandra's FIA Specialist referred her to the Job Training Program, Manpower and to the PMP employment agency. She also encouraged Sandra to get her GED. Sandra was interested in all of the programs but, when her work restriction was lifted, she decided to focus her energies on gaining employment. In October 1998, through Manpower she secured a temporary position as a Machine Operator at Mayfair Plastics. The FIA helped her obtain work boots to start the job and later provided funds for car insurance and car repairs to help her maintain employment. Sandra's FIP case closed that same month due to excess income from earnings. Sandra was so successful at Mayfair Plastics, that in January she was hired as a permanent employee. Sandra Adam was selected as the March 1999 Achiever of the month because of her accomplishments, her strong will to succeed, and her desire to remove herself and her family from dependence on the welfare system.
