Rebecca Beech

Photo of DHS Achiever of the Month for February 1999 The February 1999 Achiever of the Month Award was presented to Rebecca Beech of Saginaw County. In January of 1994, Rebecca Beech a single mother attending Delta College applied to the Saginaw County Family Independence Agency (FIA) for assistance. She received Aid for Dependent Children (ADC) and worked with the Most program. ADC provided day care, car mileage and support services. She continued her education and in 1994 she received an Associates degree in Social Work. In 1996, Rebecca married and her ADC case was closed. When she became pregnant she worked until the birth of her second child. Due to the family's limited income she was forced to return to work six weeks after the birth. At this time Rebecca and her family were having serious financial problems. The rent was six months in arrears and their car had been repossessed. Rebecca's grim situation became even worse when her husband left the household and she and her two children were evicted from their home. Rebecca moved to Shiawassee County to be closer to her immediate family, who provided her with emotional and practical support. Despite their help she continued to be depressed and lacked motivation. After several weeks of "moping around" she received a visit from her mother, who told her to get busy and look for work. Rebecca took the advice and on October 22, 1998, went to the Shiawassee County FIA for assistance. That was the turning point. After attending her first FIA-Work First orientation she became committed to making a better life for herself and her family. On October 28, she wrote her resume at the Work First meeting and the next day had two interviews, and received two job offers. Rebecca was unsure about which one to accept so she called her Work First provider for advice. Human Investment and Development Corporation was so impressed by her skills and her success they asked her to come in for an interview. Today she does orientation sessions for Work First participants. In December of 1998, Rebecca's public assistance case closed because of excess income.
