January's Achiever of the Month Award was presented to Audra Wilkinson. Audra Wilkinson is the single mother of three children. She turned to the Family Independence Agency (FIA) for assistance in June of 1995. At that time she and her two children were living in a shelter for victims of domestic abuse. Audra was expecting her third child, working part time and needed help with housing, food, transportation and health care. Later, when Audra and her family moved into their own apartment the FIA provided the security deposit and the first month's rent. In addition, the agency helped with day care expenses, car repairs, and supplied Medicaid for health care. In 1997, Audra became interested in supplementing her income through additional part-time employment. She was referred to the Work First program where she gained the knowledge and skills needed to conduct her job search. She was an enthusiastic participant and committed to finding a new job. The Work First staff, impressed by her progress in mastering new skills and her positive attitude, encouraged her to apply for a position at Work Skills Corporation Action Associates (the company that provides job counseling and skills training for Work First participants). She obtained the position and currently works there as a Job Coach. Audra also has part-time employment with Livingston County Community Mental Health. In November of 1997, her public assistance case closed because of excess income. Audra is on a path that will inspire her personal development and her children's. She has turned her life around and is a wonderful role model.
