| Lisa Kohli |
Lisa Kohli, a single mother of three children, is the November 1998 Achiever of the Month. She applied for assistance from the Family Independence Agency in August of 1997, while she was unemployed and pregnant with her third child. Lisa had numerous barriers to employment. Her car was not working, she could not find affordable day care and she had never earned her high school diploma. Lisa was referred to Work First, but was unhappy about entering the program. She doubted that it could meet her needs, or provide her with any real help to change her life. As a Work First participant Lisa received supportive services for car repairs, mileage reimbursement, work-related clothing, and can now afford day care through day care assistance funding. She attended life skills classes which helped build her self-esteem. Lisa, encouraged by her self growth and motivated by her counselors, applied to take the GED test. She and her family were extremely proud when she passed. After a brief job search Lisa gained employment with Hutchinson FTS; a company that supplies air conditioner parts to Chrysler. She enjoys her job and is pleased to be still working there today. In June 1998 her public assistance case closed because of excess income. Lisa is an wonderful role model for her children and has shown them that maintaining stable employment is an integral part of becoming self-sufficient.
