| Denise Jones |
The September 1998 Achiever of the Month Award was presented to Denise Jones. The mother of two sought assistance from the Van Buren County Family Independence Agency and applied for Food Stamps in August of 1997 when a difficult pregnancy left her unable to work. After the birth of her second child she worked part-time at Heartland Home Health Care. In a short period of time Denise’s earned income led to the closing of her FIA case. Unfortunately, her working hours were reduced and it became necessary for her to reapply for aid. Denise was enrolled in the Work First Program and while still an active participant gained employment as a health care aid. Her job at Wings of Hope Hospice working with terminally ill patients provides her with a great deal of personal satisfaction. After only a few visits she says her patients, “seem like family”. Work First provided support services for car insurance, car repairs and work related clothing. Her FIA and FS case closed in July of 1998. Denise continues to receive Transitional Medical Assistance and day care services. She feels that these services enable her to continue being a strong income earner.
