| Debra Makoutz |
The August 1998 Achiever of the Month, Debra Makoutz, is the single mother of six children. She applied for public assistance in November 1987 after going to the Caring House, a shelter for abuse victims. Debra needed to find new housing, but she was not working and was not receiving financial support from her separated spouse. The Agency was able to help Debra and her children settle into a new home, near relatives who could provide emotional support. Debra began taking classes through Bay De Noc Community College in 1994 and, with the assistance of Work First and JTPA help for tuition, books and other school expenses, she graduated with an LPN degree in August of 1997. While in school, she held jobs waitressing and maintained good grades, raised her children and maintained their home. Debra passed her board exams in August of 1997 and received her LPN license. She started working at Manorcare Health Services in October of 1997. Recently, she secured a second job at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital where she works on an on-call basis. Debra’s FIP case closed in November of 1997 due to excess income. Debra is an inspiration to all who come in contact with her and does volunteer motivational addresses to other Work First participants to show them that they too can make it.
