| Angelita Carpentier |
The March 1998 Achiever of the Month is Angelita Carpentier, the mother of three children. She worked as a nurse’s aide in northern Michigan but was laid off from that job. She tried to find other employment, but was not successful so she applied for public assistance in August, 1997. Angelita moved to Ionia County in October, 1997 to live with her parents and with the hope of having a better chance of finding work. In Ionia County, Angelita’s FIA case manager referred her to the Work First Program. She utilized services through both the FIA and Work First and was hired at Frigidaire in Greenville in October, 1997 where she earns almost $10.00 per hour at the factory. The FIA paid for a drug test which was required by the employer. Work First provided appropriate work clothes, gas money to get to work, a referral to 4C for day care, and two $100 payments under the new Work First transitional support payment program. Work First also provided 100 percent reimbursement to Frigidaire for Angelita’s first four weeks of employment (160 hours). Angelita’s FIP case closed in December, 1997.
