| Tonya Latham |
The December Achiever of the Month award for 1997 was presented to Tonya Latham. Tonya is the single mother of one son and turned to the Family Independence Agency in 1989 to help make ends meet. Unable to be completely free from the system she relied on public assistance on and off for many years. In December of 1996, the Family Independence Agency referred her to Peckham Vocational Industries to take part in the Work First Program. She received help with her resume and interviewing skills. Tonya sent out many resumes, but despite daily job search activity and excellent follow through, none of the job interviews led to a job offer. Instead of giving up, she tried harder. Tonya participated in a mock interview with a local employer, brought in classified ads with a dozen possibilities circled, mailed letters and made phone calls. In June of 1997 her hard work paid off. An employer she had applied to in March called her with a new opening. She interviewed and was immediately hired by Century 21 - Shellhorn as a Realtor’s assistant. Since that time, she has received a promotion. Remembering how difficult it can be to find a job, Tonya watches out for other Work First clients. After she started working at Century 21 - Shellhorn, she called the Work First office with job leads for other clients.
