| Lou Mears |
Lou Mears, the November 1997 Achiever of the Month, is the single mother of two children. As a child she was raised on public assistance and as an adult she relied on public assistance to support her family. She had been unemployed for four years and felt that there was no hope or use in finding a job. In May of 1995 Mason County FIA referred her to Work First. Through Work First she was taught how to fill out an application and develop a resume. She began to have more confidence in her appearance and communication abilities. She filled out several applications including one to Rite Aide Pharmacy. Lou was called for an interview at Rite Aide Pharmacy. She explained that she did not have experience counting money, but they hired her because of her positive personality and neat appearance. She has been trained in counting money and she has steadily been fulfilling her goal of getting off public assistance. Her FIP case closed in October of 1996 due to excess income. Since then she has purchased a house and is able to afford birthday parties for her children. She is able to pay her bills on time and she feels that if she had not been encouraged by the FIA and Work First Program she would still be unemployed.
