| Betty Perry |
Betty Perry is the Family Independence Agency Achiever of the Month for October 1997. Betty and her husband have four grown children, two grandchildren and two children at home. She is a member of the Keweenaw Bay Chippewa Indian Community. Betty’s life changed when her husband became disabled. She applied for public assistance in June 1997 because she feared that her family would be without health insurance and income. In an effort to become self-sufficient, Betty participated in the Work First program through the Western Upper Peninsula Manpower Consortium. Looking for work was a difficult thing for her to do because she hadn’t been employed since a summer job in 1965, although she had a number of volunteer experiences. She looked for work at the local grocery stores but was turned down due to a physical limitation that does not allow her to lift over 20 pounds. With perseverance and encouragement from her family she applied for work at the Ojibwa Casino. She got the job and is currently employed at the reception desk for the hotel. She enjoys her job and is one step closer to becoming financially independent.
