| Michael and Elizabeth Stanley |
Michael and Elizabeth Stanley of Standish received the 1997 September Achiever of the Month Award. They are the parents of five children and have been on and off public assistance since 1985. Through the help of the Arenac County Family Independence Agency and Michigan Works! Region 7B Consortium they enrolled in the Work First Program. Both Mike and Elizabeth learned pre-employment skills for four weeks. Following intensive training they were each placed at separate Community Work Experience Program sites to gain work experience. Region 7B assisted them with securing interviews for full time employment. Elizabeth is working full time at the Standish Community Hospital as an admittance clerk. Michael works sixty hours a week for Heritier Drainage as a laborer and heavy equipment operator, although he is temporarily off work because of a broken ankle. The Stanley’s have overcome many barriers on the road to financial independence. They are excellent role models for their children and have shown them the benefits of working. Their FIP case closed due to earnings from employment in June of 1997.
