Darnell Carter

Photo of the August 1997 Achiever of the Month Darnell Carter Darnell Carter, the August 1997 Achiever of the Month, is the single father of his seven year old daughter. He applied for public assistance at the Wayne County, Harper/Gratiot District Family Independence Agency when his daughter came into his life in 1995. He did not know that he was the father of a child until he was told by a relative of the child’s mother. The mother had abandoned the child and his daughter was in foster care. Darnell immediately began searching for his daughter in the foster care system. He worked with the foster care worker, had paternity established, completed parenting classes and was given custody of his daughter in 1995. In an effort to become financially independent, Darnell was referred to Work First and attended an orientation at Curtis & Associates, a contract agency of Michigan Works!, in April, 1997. At his orientation it was announced that Curtis & Associates had a job opening involving job placement. He interviewed for and got the job. His case closed due to earnings from employment in July, 1997.
