| Beth Garner |
The 1997 July Achiever of the Month Award was presented to Beth Garner of Trout Lake. Beth is the mother of four children and she is pregnant with her fifth child. Since 1990 the Garner family has turned to the Family Independence Agency during difficult times. Beth was referred to the Michigan Works! UP Employment and Training Consortium to take part in the Work First program in September 1995. She attended Work First classes for two weeks, then she obtained employment at Wal-Mart in Sault Ste. Marie working twenty-four hours a week. After working at Wal-Mart for three months, Beth enrolled in a certified nurses assistant training class that was being offered at Mackinac Straits Long Term Care Facility. She continued to work at Wal-Mart, some days commuting 150 miles, because she was not guaranteed a permanent position after her training. Upon completion of training she was hired by the facility under the On-the-Job-Training program and within a few months she was offered a full-time position with retirement and health benefits for herself. In addition to this job, she is working with her husband at the Trout Lake Park. Their case closed due to excess earnings in June 1996.
