Laurie Comerford

Photo of Laurie Comerford, May 1997 Achiever of the Month The 1997 May Achiever of the Month Award recognized Laurie Comerford of Traverse City. Faced with many barriers, Laurie turned to the Leelanau County FIA to help make ends meet in March of 1997. As a pregnant teen, she completed her high school education through the Teen Parent Program and graduated with an "A" average. Her child was born premature in 1995 and has Cerebral Palsy. She also receives assistance from the Early On program. Determined to not let public assistance become a way of life, Laurie immediately secured employment at Petsmart, a new business in the area, through the Work First Program. Work First was able to help her with getting a uniform for her new job. She is currently working full. Laurie is an example of someone who benefited from interagency collaboration by using the resources available through several agencies to create a future for herself and her child.
