Karen Vergosen of St. Clair Shores received the Achiever of the Month Award for February 1997. A divorced mother of three, Karen turned to the Macomb County FIA in 1988 to help make ends meet. Lacking self-esteem she still made efforts to become independent by enrolling in community college courses. However, she suffered a serious leg injury, suffered two blood clots and lost her home. Things began to turn around when Karen attended a Work First orientation in 1995. She faxed her resume to over 30 companies, interviewed with 10 companies and received two excellent job offers. Two months after attending the Work First orientation, she was employed as a receptionist earning $7.50 per hour for a mortgage company. One year later she had been promoted twice and was earning over $13 per hour, plus benefits. Recently, Karen has taken time to visit with the Work First staff and speak to clients to help motivate them. She has shared job openings in the company she works for with Work First staff which resulted in another Work First participant being hired. Her FIP case closed in November of 1995.
