| Pamela Nelson |
Pamela Nelson of Detroit was awarded with the 1996 November Achiever of the Month Award which was presented in conjunction with Homeless Awareness Week in Michigan. In December 1993, Pam's mother was hit by a car and killed and in October 1994 her husband was sent to prison. Soon after, her children were removed from her custody because she began using drugs and she found herself in the streets. Pam came to the Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries in November 1994 pregnant, crack addicted, homeless and she had no identification and no income. The FIA homeless action team placed her at Genesis House III and she was referred to the substance abuse counselor and was subsequently placed at the Eleanor Hutzel Treatment Center. After treatment and with the help of the FIA housing unit, Pam obtained a house. She has all seven of her children back with her and is currently a nursing student at Wayne County Community College and is managing a restaurant three days a week for a total of 20 hours.
