Carol Sue King

DHS Achiever 071996 Carol Sue King of Cheboygan, a single mother of four children, was awarded the July 1996 Achiever of the Month Award. After years of being in an abusive relationship, Carol Sue filed for divorce. She held a number of part-time jobs but was unable to make ends meet so she turned to the FIA for help. Carol Sue overcame transportation barriers, problems relating to her housing as well as her own health problems. The FIA helped her pay a year of back property taxes, purchase a new furnace and helped with the cost of heating fuel. She secured part-time employment at Cheboygan Health Care Center in April of 1995 as a housekeeper at a starting wage of $5.00 per hour. Over time, she has worked herself into full-time employment at the center and has received several pay increases. Her AFDC case closed in July of 1995 due to excess income.
